Connecticut is a state in the New England region of the Northeastern United States. Connecticut was the 5th state admitted into the Union in 1788. Connecticut is known as the "Constitution State". Connecticut is a beautiful state with beautiful scenery. Connecticut has a very high percentage of Democratic voters and is 2nd state to allow same-sex marriages and not repeal the decision. Ethan Allen- (1738-1789) - Ethan Allen was born in rural Connecticut- He was an American Revolutionary Major General War Patriot-He is one of the founders of the state of Vermont. He was captured and treated harshly; he was brought to England and imprisoned at Pendennis Castle, Cornwall. He spent about three years in captivity for his country and was eventually released. Ethan Allen was a great American Patriot.
Benedict Arnold- (1741-1801) - Benedict Arnold was born in Norwich, Connecticut. He was an American general in the Revolutionary war who later defected to the British. He plotted to surrender West Point to the British, but he was unsuccessful. He then led British forces on raids against American forces. Benedict Arnold was a traitor to his country and he died in England. His name is a byword in the United States and means treason.
Abraham Baldwin- (1754-1807) - Abraham Baldwin was born in Guilford, Connecticut. He was an American politician, patriot and Founding Father; he was a Georgian representative in the Continental Congress and served in the US House of Representatives and the Senate after the adoption of the Constitution. Abraham Baldwin was a graduate from Yale, was a minister and he died in Washington D. C.
Mary Kies- (1752-1837) - Mary Kies was born in Killingly, Connecticut. She was the first woman to receive a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1809 for a technique of weaving straw with silk and thread. Mary Kies died penniless in New York City, New York because she never profited from her patent.
Noah Webster- (1758-1843) - Noah Webster was born in West Hartford, Connecticut. He was an America Lexicographer who is considered "the Father of American Scholarship and Education. His name is synonymous with dictionary. Noah Webster published his first dictionary in 1806 called the A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language, in 1807 he began compiling the American Dictionary of the English language and it took twenty-seven years to complete. Noah Webster completed his own version of the Bible in 1833, called the common version.
Charles Goodyear- (1800-1860) -Charles Goodyear was born in New Haven, Connecticut and is the inventor of vulcanized rubber. Four decades after his death, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company was named after Goodyear.
Phineas T. Barnum- (1810-1891) -Phineas T. Barnum was born in Bethel, Connecticut. He was one of the founders of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. Phineas T. Barnum may have been the first show business millionaire.
Harriet Beecher Stowe- (1811-1896) -Harriet Beecher Stowe was born in Litchfield, Connecticut and was the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Harriet Beecher Stowe was an abolitionist and publicly stood against slavery.
Samuel Colt-(1814-1862) -Samuel Colt was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Samuel Colt is the founder of Colt's Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company and is credited with popularizing the revolver. He produced Colt revolvers for the U S to use in the Mexican/American War; he also invented the Colt revolving rifle. Samuel Colt was National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006.
Horace Austin- (1831-1905) - Horace Austin was born in Canterbury, Connecticut. He was the 6thgovernor of Minnesota and was a Republican. Horace Austin was a judge before he became governor of Minnesota, he died in Minnesota
Katharine Hepburn- (1907-2003) - Katharine Hepburn was born in Hartford, Connecticut. She won Four Academy Awards as an actress, her first in 1933 and her last in 1981 for On Golden Pond. Katharine Hepburn is widely known as one of the best Hollywood actresses who starred with many of the most widely known leading men.
Ernest Borgnine- (1917)-Ernest Borgnine was born in Hamden, Connecticut. He is best known for playing Quinton McHale's Navy 1962-1966. He is also an Academy Award winning actor and even played a part on SpongeBob SquarePants. Ernest Borgnine won an Emmy at the age of 92 for his work on ER.
George W. Bush- (1946) -George W. Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut. George W. Bush was the 46th governor of Texas 1995-2000 and was the 43rd President of the United States 2001-2009. George W. Bush actually owned the Texas Rangers for a time. He is the son of President of George H. W. Bush and the brother to former Florida governor, Jeb Bush.
Glenn Close- (1947) -Glenn Close was born in Greenwich, Connecticut. Glenn Close Is an American actress. She has been nominated five times for an Oscar, and has won three Tony's, an Obie, three Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She is famous for playing a stalker in Fatal Attraction and now plays on a TV series on FX called Damages.
Meg Ryan- (1961) -Meg Ryan was born in Fairfield, Connecticut. Meg Ryan is a famous American actress who is famous for You Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle and other movies. Meg Ryan is married to actor Dennis Quaid.
