15 Famous People From Alabama



Alabama is a place where many famous people were born. These are fifteen famous people who were born in Alabama. This is a new series about famous people who were born in particular states. The first of the series will be famous people from Alabama. These are not all the famous people who were born in Alabama. These 15 famous people from Alabama were chosen at my discretion.
Hank Aaron-Famous Home Run hitter in Major League Baseball, held the home run record with 756 until Barry Bonds broke the record in 2007, Bonds is a known steroid user and the record books will probably have an asterisk, most people still consider Hank Aaron the true home run record holder. He is also a member of the Hall of Fame. Hank Aaron was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1934
Mary Badham-was nominated for an academy award as a ten year old actress for her part in "To Kill a Mockingbird", now works as an art restorer and college testing coordinator, she was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1952
Bobby Bowden-was a Florida State football coach from 1976-2009, won two National Championships, won 377-129-4 as a head coach, twelve games were vacated because of a scandal, won 12 ACC Championships, was (sort of) forced into retirement in 2009. Bobby Bowden was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1929.
Nat King Cole-famous singer, who is known for his song "unforgettable", had his own television show in 1956 called the Nat King Cole Show, was canceled because of prejudices at the time. Nat King Cole was born Nathaniel Adams in Montgomery, Alabama in 1917, he died in 1965
Emmylou Harris- Emmylou Harris is a famous country music singer, songwriter and musician. In 2008, her album "All I Intended To Be debuted #4 on the Billboard Country Charts. Emmylou Harris was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947
Taylor Hicks-Taylor Hicks is famous for winning the fifth season of the American Idol in 2006; he was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1976.
Kate Jackson- If you heard of the "Charlie's Angels" sitcom in the 1970's, you have heard of Kate Jackson. She also played in "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" in the 1980's. Kate Jackson has recently played a recurring role on "Criminal Minds". Kate Jackson was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1948
Helen Keller- Helen Keller is probably the most famous blind and death author of all time. Her life has been portrayed in many movies including Deliverance in 1919, The Miracle Worker in 1959 and the Story of Helen Keller. Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1880 and died in 1968.
Coretta Scott King-Coretta Scott King was the widow of Martin Luther King Jr. and was also a Civil Rights activist. Coretta Scott King was born in Marion, Alabama in 1927 and she died in 2006.
Harper Lee-Harper Lee was a famous author who wrote "To Kill a Mockingbird", this was her only novel. Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama in 1926.
Carl Lewis-Carl Lewis is a famous Olympic athlete who won Gold medals in track and field in the Olympics; he won nine gold medals and one silver medal in the 1984, 1988, 1992, and 1996 Olympics. Carl Lewis was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1961.
Joe Lewis-Joe Lewis was a professional boxer, he was the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion from 1937-1949. He is considered one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. Joe Lewis won 68 fights and lost 3, he had 51 KO's. Joe Lewis was born in Lafayette, Alabama in 1914 and he died in 1981.
Willie Mays-Willie Mays is a famous Major League baseball player; he played most of his professional career for the New York/San Francisco Giants. Willie Mays hit 660 Home Runs in his Major League career and is a member of the Hall of Fame. Willie Mays was born in Westfield, Alabama in 1931.
Jesse Owens-Jesse Owens won four Gold Medals in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany in track and field. he was an African American who succeeded in the Olympic Games in Nazi Germany where Hitler hated his race and others. He was born in Oakfield, Alabama in 1913 and he died in 1980.
Rosa Parks-Rosa Parks was the Civil Rights leader who refused to give up her seat and go to the back of the bus. Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1913 and she died in 2005
Alabama is a place where many famous people were born. Alabama reared some of the greatest athletes of our time and some of the most famous Civil Rights leaders. Bobby Bowden may be the most famous college football coach around. Hank Aaron was the greatest homerun hitter in Major league baseball and Joe Louis is considered one of the greatest Heavyweight boxers of all time. These are just some of the most famous people who are from Alabama, there are many more.
