Growing Families: Three Ideas for Enlarging Your Home

Sometimes families grow more quickly than you anticipate, and you’re left with a home that you love that is too small for your family. If you’re not in a place where you’d like to sell and purchase a new home, there are actually several things you can do to help make your own space more bearable even with your growing family. Adequate space can give you a peace of mind, help you feel on top of your life, and help eliminate conflicts between family members. Here are a few ways to think outside the four walls of your home and develop the space you need to breathe.

Add On a Room

If you’ve got ample land to work with, a room add-on may be a good solution for you. You could add on an extra bedroom, a rec room, an office, or expand an already-existing room. Take a look at your home, talk to some experts, and determine the best area to add on. Once you’ve determined the best area to add on, figure out what type of room would make the most sense in that area. Adding on may seem like a costly endeavor, but remember that more square footage on your house means that the property value will likely go up, and hopefully you will get back what you put into it and then some when it comes time to sell. Remember to hire contractors you can trust who will do the job well and to your specifications.

Purchase a Travel Trailer

If you have space in your back yard, a motor home might be a good solution to create more home space. Motor homes have become increasingly nicer, and they offer a lot of amenities that may make life easier for you. You can use a motor home as a guest bedroom, a bedroom for older children, an office, or even a master bedroom if your children are old enough to sleep in the house on their own. You can find an affordable, high-end travel trailer that meets your needs. It may also be nice to have some extra kitchen space, and a spare bathroom at a fraction of the cost of building new rooms onto your home. The travel trailer could also give you some extra storage space for items you don’t use every day or be a quiet office space to get away from a noisy house when you just need to get some work done.

Create Outdoor Space

If you live in an area that has a moderate climate most of the year, one of the most inexpensive ways to create more space is to utilize garage or outdoor space and make them more livable. Many families choose to convert their garage into an office, home gym, or active area for their children. If you have a driveway where you can park your car, the garage space can be very helpful. You can also update a backyard space to create a dining room, living area, or play area all in the great outdoors.
