George Washington was the 1st president of the United States 1789-97, was a lieutenant General and became the General of the armies of the United States. Fought for freedom and defeated the British as commander and chief of the Continental Army, was the "Father of his country", we could use some leaders like George Washington today. He died on this day in 1799
