How to Prevent Clogged Pipes

One of the most common reasons a plumber in Midland is called is because someone has a clogged pipe. This is a fairly easy thing to avoid, as long as you are willing to make the effort. No one enjoys having a clogged pipe, so be sure to do the following things and avoid the issue altogether.

Preventative Solutions

One of the most common reasons a pipe is clogged is hair. Women, especially, enjoy doing their hair over a sink or get hair down the shower drain. First, purchase a hair trap for any showers or bathtubs. If you clean off the hair trap after each shower, only water and soap will go down the drain, and it will still drain quickly. Avoid brushing or doing hair over a sink. If you need to, purchase a vanity mirror and a desk to give yourself an area to do your hair. Flyaway hairs will always be washed down a sink and build up over time.

Avoid putting other things down a drain that can clog it, like large chunks of food or thick liquids. Keep small children away from drains if possible – they are known to shove small toys or other similar things down there. Watch your amount of toilet paper usage; flush twice if necessary to flush down less toilet paper at once. Never send feminine products down the toilet; they should always go in the trash can.

Regular Cleaning is Important

Over time, a drain may slowly build a clog and slow down, which usually cannot be avoided. Pay attention to how quickly your drains function so that you can tell whenever a clog is starting to form. Once you notice your drain has slowed, act immediately before the clog can build any more. There are wire sticks available at the grocery store that you can put down the drain to drag the clog back out. If this does not work, use a product that is meant to get rid of clogs. These are usually liquids that you send down the drain and will break up the clog. If this does not work, call the plumber in Midland as soon as possible to fix the problem.
