Executives will need to become more proficient at cross-cultural communications and collaboration in order to remain viable entities in the new corporate climate.

4. Continuing Education
Executives on every level realize the importance of continued education. However, the type of education required in the new millennium has less to do with bookwork and more to do with mental agility and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. The corporate landscape is shifting faster now than ever before, and executives who wish to remain on top must constantly add to their pool of knowledge in order to stay competitive with emerging market forces and unforeseen challenges. 

5. Cultivating a Global Perspective
Aside from certain industries that are and will remain, by their very nature, local industries, the majority of companies must have the ability to compete globally. Today's executive should be well-traveled and comfortable with persons from diverse backgrounds. They must also have the ability to oversee workforces and relate to customer bases in locations that are scattered across the globe. Ranking well solely among U.S. executives is no longer enough to remain at the top. 

6. Cultivating Social and Environmental Awareness
The admonishment to "Think globally and act locally." has never been truer than it is today. In addition to cultivating a more global perspective, senior executives should also demonstrate they and their company's commitment to concerns closer to home by involvement in supporting local charities, social issues and environmental concerns. Consumers want to know that the companies they do business with care about their impact on the community and the future of the earth and its resources.
