Dealing With Frozen Pipes In The Dead Of Winter

I hate cold weather. I remember growing up in New York State. We lived in a little town called Altmar, NY. It is about seven miles from Pulaski. We averaged 140 inches of snow per year and the temps were often below zero. I grew up hating cold weather and I still hate it to this day. The worst thing is when you get frozen pipes and no water gets into your house. This is a disaster I had to live through one winter in Kentucky. Hopefully, you can learn from my experiences.

I went to college in Cincinnati in the 1980's and decided to move to Kentucky. My first place was a little trailer in a nice trailer park. I knew nothing about trailers or trailer parks. The first winter just happened to be very cold. My water pipes froze under the trailer, busted and began to leak. I had to get under the trailer in the cold and change the water pipes. I did not know what I was doing, so I asked a couple of plumbers in the hardware stores what to do. This was the type of cold nobody wants to get out in and it was not fun. I finally got the pipes fixed, covered them to protect against the cold and cleaned up my mess.

I learned that some trailers were not set up for cold weather. There was no protection on or around these water pipes and they froze. Frozen water pipes in the cold winter are no fun. I learned to make sure my water pipes could stand up to the cold After I thawed off, I enjoyed the rest of the winter in my warm trailer. I was actually able to help somebody else with my knowledge who was dealing with the same thing years later. My biggest piece of advice is to prepare for the cold if you have to live in the cold. Your local plumber has tips that will help you make it through those cold winter nights. Their tips will make sure you won't have to deal with frozen pipes in the dead of winter.
